The Future of Business Analysis in the Age of Big Data

As an idea, or rather as a buzz word, big data subsumes many other topics, such as business analysis, data analysis, business intelligence, data intelligence, even that most general of all words, information management.

However, for the first time, big data is not only the corporate and more formal business data farms, but also deals with all those informal sources and unstructured data which flood us daily, in the social media, as images, as emails, as videos, as tweets, what`s app messages, sensor messages, and in many other forms. This is both exciting and a challenge.

People currently assume that the proportion between data in RDBM systems and unstructured data in the big organizations is about 50:50, but unstructured data are increasing exponentially. This presents challenges and new opportunities.

- In the education and training field, we shall push to provide several ibae (see curricula) advanced level options, including more technical ones, and at least one so specialised that participants will be able to call themselves "data scientists". In business, we need to be even more agile, more communicative, and link our intuitions, insights and findings to great visualization, for even better support of the decisions which will be taken by our stakeholders. The real of prospective / imagined customer story will become even more important for the formulation of requirements. - New customer segments will emerge. Tranditionally, the financial services have absorbed the majority of Business analysts. Some found employment in the life sciences. Some in intelligence and security. Fewer still, in production or the public services. This will change, and industry and public services (especially the emerging smart environments of mega cities and similar scenarios) will develop a great appetite for people with business analysis skills and some knowledge of stakeholder management.
